Join our group of warm-hearted dancers at our blues week-end of classes and parties on the 3rd June – 4th June 2023.
BLUES AESTHETICS
Blues music and Blues dances are the cultural heritage of Black American people. Blues aesthetics describes a variety of artistic and cultural values that are inherent to these cultural practices. In the words of Black American dancer Shelby Johnson:
“Aesthetic is not only how something looks but artistic value. It’s a way to keep it culturally rooted but also be creative.”
My aim as a teacher is to facilitate an environment of communal exploration, sharing, connection and self-expression within this framework of characteristics and values of Blues dancing as a social and art form.
TEACHER
Jona
Jona (they/em/she) is a dancer, teacher and organizer from Leipzig, Germany and the cat in the Cat & Kat teaching team. Jona has over 10 years of experience in the dance scene as a leader, follower and solo dancer with training in a variety of Blues and Jazz dances while also exploring other Black dance forms, West African and Latin dances and a variety of Embodiment practices. Jona’s approach to teaching is holistic and value based. They love to facilitate guided explorations with the group that emphasize the importance of the cultural context of the dances by sharing sources from artists, creators and tradition bearers of the respective culture that shaped her idea of dancing. Jona also works towards dismantling preconceived ideas such as assigned gender roles and finding your voice as a dancer while creating equal partnerships and comfortable connections.
