Cold Fusion – New Horizons

Cold Fusion – New Horizons
24.-26.05.2024
Erlangen, Germany

Join our group of warm-hearted dancers at our very special fusion week-end of classes and parties for all levels and types of experience.

Join Annette and Jae for a workshop exploring diverse partnered dance styles. With over 15 years of experience in blues, swing, tango, and more, we’ll delve into various techniques and expressions while dancing to a wide range of music. Don’t miss out on the chance to discover new ways to connect and express yourself on the dance floor!

WHAT IS FUSION DANCING

Fusion Dancing welcomes people from different dance styles to mix up and dance together. The dance is not based on any predefined steps and movements instead you improvise together. This puts a spotlight on your connection to your dance partner and to the music. Every dance can be a new interaction and a new individual style. Fusion can be danced to a whole variety of different music styles.

CLASSES

Topics

If you put Spotify on shuffle, how would you dance to the songs that came on?  How might you dance to this or this or this? Would you dance a travelling dance — perhaps borrowing stretch and compression connection inspired from West Coast Swing?  Would you highlight a slotted dance or perhaps more of a circular lindy focus?  Would you gravitate toward emphasizing rhythmic or emotional expression, digging into your blues experience? Or would you get into close embrace to explore a dance that emphasizes the partnership?

Join Annette and Jae on a workshop that explores different modalities of partnered connection (travelling, rhythmic, closed…).  Together, we’ve got more than 15 years of blues and swing, several years of tango and many years of dabbling in other dances such as flamenco, samba, balboa or west coast swing under our belt, but we won’t be teaching blues, or swing, or tango or salsa.  Instead, we are going to play a wide range of music, and see how different techniques and approaches to connection and expression allow us to address the dance.

P.S. We don’t promise there won’t be a class where we just put our spotify on Random and see what you come up with…

General Infos

You will receive 7 hours of dance classes by Annette and Jae. General partner dancing experience is required for the workshops, but previous knowledge in one specific dance is recommended but not needed.

This workshop is for you if:

  • you want to widen your scope of dancing or even combine your favorite dances
  • you want to experience a deeper connection with your dance partner
  • you want to be able to dance your favorite dance to different kinds of music
  • want to dance together with dancers coming from different backgrounds

This workshop is not for you if:

  • you have no experience in partnered dancing at all (if this is the case, but you really want to join, please get in touch with us and we might find a way to get you from zero to hero before the workshop starts)
  • you are very uncomfortable with dancing close with your dance partner

PARTIES

We will have parties all three nights, starting on Friday with a party to warm us all up to the idea of “Cold Fusion”. Pun intended.
There will be a pre-dance class introducing you to some fusion concepts so you can have fun right away.
Saturday will be our big blow-out party. And Sunday we will send everyone off with the best vibes at our cozy fusion house party.

TEACHERS

Annette and Jae

Jae and Annette go way back. Almost 20 years! In the early days, when the weekly social and Unisport classes couldn’t quite scratch the itch, they found themselves dancing lindy hop in the streets of Heidelberg.  Annette brought her ballroom, swing and tango background and Jae had his house party fusion and west coast swing vibe.  It was an exciting and formative mess of idea exchange which would shape their dancing for years to come.
As blues made it’s way to Europe, Annette lead the charge as a scene leader in Heidelberg and organizer / instructor on the European festival circuit. Jae moved back to the States and helped grow the fusion scene while remaining an active participant in the blues community.
These days you’re more likely to find Jae and Annette at a live music gig. Their dance might be inspired by Annette’s newest dance love flamenco or the buckjumping Jae saw in New Orleans, but at the heart of their dance lies a love of expression through movement underpinned by partnership fundamentals distilled from their breadth of experience in social dance forms.
